What is a convertible car seat?
A convertible car seat, also known as a 0-4 car seat, is an adjustable child car seat that complies with Australian standards to work in rearward and forward-facing modes. Maxi-Cosi convertible car seats offer extended rearward facing for up to 30 months.
When can a baby face forward in a car seat in Australia?
Legally, your baby can be forward-facing from 6 months of age or when they have reached the first forward-facing height marker on your child’s car seat; however, we recommend that your child remain rearward-facing for as long as possible to ensure the best protection for your child. How do I know when my child has outgrown their seat?
The progression from baby capsules, convertible car seats, and harnessed or unharnessed booster seats differs for every child and is covered by legal requirements and Australian standards. Can I use a car seat I bought overseas in Australia?
No, having a child travelling in a restraint not approved by Australian standards is illegal. Australian Standards have strict requirements for car seats for children aged 0-4 years old and stringent minimum design, construction and performance requirements that manufacturers in other countries don’t meet.
What is the Australian Standard for child car seats?
The Australian Standard for child car seats is AS/NZS 1754. It sets out the minimum design, construction, and performance requirements to ensure high protection for children travelling in cars. AS/NZS 1754 is recognised as a world-leading standard. It was the first to introduce side impact testing, resulting in the noticeable side wings on Australian-standard child restraints.

What are the car seat laws in my state or territory?
Car seat laws are largely the same across all of Australia, with some additional regulations in different states and territories.

National Guidelines

  • Rear-Facing Car Seats: Children up to the age of six months must use an approved rear-facing car seat with an inbuilt harness.
  • Forward-Facing Car Seats: Children aged six months up to at least four years must use a rear-facing or forward-facing car seat with an inbuilt harness.
  • Booster Seats: Children between four and seven years old must be secured in a forward-facing approved car seat with an inbuilt harness or booster seat with an adult lap-sash seat belt or child safety harness.
  • Adult Seat belts: Children aged seven years and over should use an approved booster seat or an adult seat belt if they are too large for a booster seat. The minimum suggested height for using an adult seat belt is 145cm.
  • Australian Standard Compliance: All child restraints must comply with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1754; restraint labels indicate this approval.
  • Non-Compliance: Fines and penalties apply for non-compliance with child restraint laws, with fines up to $500 and demerit points varying by state and territory.

    State and Territory Guidelines:

  • New South Wales (NSWh): Specific rules apply for children under seven years of age regarding using child restraints and booster seats. Additional regulations include positioning children in vehicles, such as not allowing children under four years old to travel in the front seat when there are two or more rows of seats.

    When can my child move into a forward-facing seat?

    Baby and toddler car seats travel suitability

    A convertible car seat is commonly referred to as a forward-facing car seat. All convertible car seats have their own inbuilt six-point harness system, and this harness is used from birth until your child is approximately 4 years of age or until their shoulder reaches the upper height marker. For children older than 4 years of age, harnessed forward-facing booster or unharnessed booster seats can be used.
